Heartburn is one of the most notable symptoms of GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and acid reflux but we cannot conclude that everyone who is suffering from acid reflux experiences heartburn pain and not everyone with heartburn has acid reflux.

Heartburn is very common, in fact, almost everyone experience it at least once in their lives. Pregnant women are not exempt either, in fact, about twenty five percent have heartburn or related symptoms. Even young, healthy people will have a share of it particularly after eating foods that are known to irritate the lining of the esophagus. Some people deal with heartburn like it is a part of their lives already but for those who encounter it infrequently, it’s rather difficult to distinguish.

Since the pain associated with heartburn is felt in the chest, some people often mistake it with cardiac problems or a heart attack. It has nothing to do with the heart, actually. The pain can be attributed to the stomach acid splashing up and out of the stomach. It usually feels like a burning pain that starts in the upper abdomen or behind the breastbone and moves up to the neck and throat. Sometimes it would seem like food is coming back into the mouth, leaving a sour or bitter taste. Heartburn can be brief or can continue for a few hours.

-Other things which can help you in identifying heartburn:

Frequent burping

A very full feeling

Chest pain, especially after eating, when lying down or bending over

Feeling of food sticking in the middle of the throat or chest

Difficulty swallowing

Burning in the throat

Hot, sour or salty-tasting fluid at the back of the throat

Wheezing

The symptoms mentioned above are all it takes (most of the time) to diagnose heartburn but sometimes additional testing is considered necessary such as X-ray and Endoscopy.

-How to tell the difference between heartburn and heart attack

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons why people are rushed to the emergency room. While a lot of these cases are associated with heart attack, some are just actually experiencing heartburn.

The easiest way to determine whether you are having an episode of heartburn or not is to bend forward and touch your toes for thirty seconds. The symptoms generally increase as you bend forward because in this position, gravity will help stomach acid to enter the esophagus.

The pain caused by cardiac problems and during a severe heartburn bout is so hard to differentiate that sometimes advanced medical testing is required. To complicate things even further, the two problems have many of the same symptoms and occur in similar types of sufferers like older people and those who have high cholesterol and are overweight.

Possible signs of heart attack you need to be aware of:

Tightness or dull pressure or pain in the center of the chest

Sudden chest pain or pressure that worsens

Squeezing pain or the feeling of a belt gripping the heart

Pain may be apparent to the shoulders, neck, arms or jaw

Dizziness

Shortness of breath

Cold sweat

Lightheadedness

Nausea

If the chest pain worsens or lasts for more than a few minutes or if you feel any warning signs of a heart attack, you have to seek medical attention immediately.

Heartburn is an unpleasant feeling of warmth or burning in the chest, just behind the breastbone or in the epigastrium. The pain worsens when you are lying down or bending over. While it is often apparent in the chest, it can also radiate to the neck, throat or angle of the jaw.

Heartburn is sometimes interchanged with acid reflux but technically, heartburn is the symptom you feel when you have acid reflux (acid splashes up and out of the stomach).

Although the heartburn pain is felt in the chest, it has nothing to do with the heart. The uncomfortable feeling is mainly caused by stomach acid.

Occasional heartburn is common, about 30% of the adult population in the United States experience it. This shouldn’t cause for alarm because the discomfort can easily be managed by taking over-the-counter medications and by doing some lifestyle changes. You can avoid heartburn by steering clear of foods or drinks that put you in a heartburn-inviting situation.

However, if you experience heartburn more frequently and it interferes with your day to day activities, you have to go see a doctor because this may be a symptom of something more serious. Persistent episodes of heartburn can indicate GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. If left untreated, this can lead to complications such as ulcers in the esophagus.

-Heartburn Causes

Once the food that we swallow gets to the stomach, stomach acid digests the food. This acid is so strong that it can damage most parts of the body. Fortunately, the stomach is protected by a special mucous layer. The esophagus on the other hand is not equipped with such special protection and when the lower esophageal sphincter does not close completely, the lower part of the esophagus is susceptible to damage by stomach acid. When this occurs, we may experience heartburn.

The lower esophageal sphincter may not close completely because of the following reasons:

1.) Certain foods and drinks such as peppermint, chocolate, tangy citrus fruits, tomatoes, garlic, onion, anything spicy, beverages that contain a considerable amount of caffeine (coffee, tea and soft drinks), fatty foods and alcohol are all known to loosen the lower esophageal sphincter and irritate the lining of the esophagus.

If you cannot avoid the foods that cause heartburn mentioned above (which is almost impossible to do anyway), you can take a product (dietary supplement like Prelief) before meals that will reduce the acid in all foods and beverages.

2.) Heartburn sometimes depends on the body’s position. The acid in the stomach flows back into the esophagus easily when you are lying down or bending over. You can purchase a wedge pillow specifically designed for people with GERD to avoid heartburn while you sleep.

3.) Lifting, straining, tight clothing, coughing, full stomach and pregnancy can also trigger heartburn because they have the tendency to increase the pressure on the stomach and they force stomach acid backward into the esophagus.

Also, eating within two to three hours before bedtime can cause stomach contents to press harder against the lower esophageal sphincter thus increasing the chances of refluxed food.

4.) People who are suffering from certain medical conditions like diabetes, autoimmune diseases and hiatal hernia may have an increased chance of heartburn.

5.) Certain blood pressure and heart medications and the asthma drug theophylline can loosen the lower esophageal sphincter thus causing heartburn.

6.) There is also a connection between heartburn and stress. Reducing your stress can possibly reduce your heartburn symptoms.

4 main reasons for heartburn pain and how to control it

It is not uncommon to suffer from heartburn pain at least a couple of times in the whole year. But if you are suffering from it every day, then it is high time to know about a solution. A person who is undergoing this kind of a disorder will experience a burning sensation or a piercing pain in the area of the chest with lots of intensity. Sometimes, this pain can travel to the area of the shoulder and the neck too. The intensity of the pain sometimes makes the person doubt whether it is heart attack.

The main reason for the heartburn pain is the content of acid that is present in the stomach entering into the area of esophagus. There are quite a lot of reasons for this to happen. Here is a list of reasons which actually lead to this particular situation of heartburn pain:

Possible Causes of Heartburn Pain and Discomfort

If you bend a lot, it might result in putting pressure on the stomach and esophagus. If the acid leaks out, the pain along with the discomfort will start soon.

Women might experience this problem during pregnancy.

Sometimes, even the kind of food you eat will add to the problem. If you consume spicy food then your stomach might produce a lot of acids. This will be the primary cause of heartburn pain.

If you consume a lot of alcohol or smoke a lot then also you will experience this kind of pain.

If you ignore this problem then your esophagus might experience damage and this is the reason why you have to know about controlling the situation. There are many over the counter drugs which don’t treat the problem effectively though they seem to give some relief. It is better to stay away from those medicines. It is advisable to use some natural home remedies to combat the problem.

Apart from that, if you can make some alterations to your way of life you can stay away from the problem up to a certain extent. You should avoid smoking. You should consume alcohol moderately. It is better to eat moderately instead of going for a full meal. Stay away from spicy foods which are highly acidic.

In this way, there are quite a lot of preventive measures which will surely help you to control the problem in a successful way. We are what we eat and what we do. This is the reason why, you need to eat the right kind of food. Go for natural foods like fruits and vegetables instead of munching on processed foods like burgers and pizzas. They are the reason for the acidity in your body and it is better to stay away from food of that kind. Apart from that, if you can actually start performing exercises on a regular basis, it would be surely helpful for your overall health. This way, you can surely reduce the risk of heartburn pain.

After you’ve popped tums like a crack addict and tried every OTC remedy available a guy or gal can get pretty darn skeptical that there is really any long term solution to a lifetime full of five alarm chest fires.

One of the reasons the problem persists is because there are MANY different reasons for heartburn pain and one solution RARELY fits every individual.

The key to ending your hearturn pain is FIRST understanding what is causing YOUR heartburn.

You may be surprised to find out that producing too much acid is NOT the root cause of most of your suffering.

Here’s one example:

If you have a bacterial or yeast infection your stomach will produce more acid to FIGHT against the infection. If you want to PERMANENTLY solve your heartburn…in this case…you need to eliminate the infection and then your acid levels will drop back down to normal.

Follow me?

At this point I’d like to suggest you figure out what’s at the root cause of YOUR heartburn.

What’s The Root Cause of YOUR Heartburn?

According to Jeff Martin, a former acid reflux sufferer of over 11 years and author of Heartburn No More™, most digestive orders can be remedied with a natural, but unique 5 step process.

Mr Martin has tested his process over the last eleven years and states that in 28 cases out of 28 got PERMANENT relief in less than 7 weeks.

Look MOM!…NO MORE TUMS:-)
